Top Gun: Maverick was one that I was initially thinking of waiting until it comes to Paramount+ since I have that streaming service anyhow, but I've heard such good things about it that I am planning on going to see it at the theater soon.

I recently watched The Northman and The Lost City on streaming. Those are very different movies, and I enjoyed both, though neither will probably be favorites of mine from this year. I was most interested that The Northman is the story that inspired Hamlet.

The Lost City is fun and made me laugh several times. I'd heard it compared to Romancing the Stone, and I can definitely see that comparison, though I like Romancing the Stone a lot more.

Top Gun: Maverick! I didn't think it could be good when it was only rumored, I didn't think it could be good when it was officially announced, I didn't have any particular nostalgia for the first film, I didn't watch any of the trailers for Maverick, I didn't think it could be this good when everybody was giving in 10/10s, but goddammit, it was. It's Hollywood. The best kind of Hollywood. It's like if you take an idealized version of what old action flicks were like, engineer out all the bad parts, take away everything forgettable, and create 2 hours of your ideal action drama in 2022. To see those planes touching down, Kenny Loggins playing, names of Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris on the screen and a Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer intro -- it's a trip to the Hollywoodland which here seems as vital as ever, and the likes of Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro or Lewis Pullman are thankfully much better than simply copying the old guys; that's the thing with this movie, everything new that it does, it does with a degree of self-consciousness and freshness. The songs by OneRepublic and Lady Gaga are instantly memorable and appropriate, but they're not simply an imitation of Danger Zone. It's good for all the reasons you might've thought Top Gun 1 was, but it's not bad for all the reasons you might've thought Top Gun 1 was. And it's not happening 30 years ago -- it's happening now. It's a 2022 classic.

I recommend everybody to see it in an actual movie theater. I know it's coming out on Paramount+ eventually, but when your seat shakes as Tom Cruise is taking off, you'll know this is a movie theater experience worth going to.

Yes, Top Gun: Maverick is entertaining. This is what we can expect from a Hollywood blockbuster.
The action and aerial sequences are efficient but mostly remain a MacGuffin.
In my opinion, the most fascinating and interesting thing is what that film says about Tom Cruise, his persona and his star status, today.
It seems to open a new era in Tom Cruise's career, in which he will be showed as an older man, a man of experience.
A little bit like Clint Eastwood since Heartbreak Ridge. Incidentally, Heartbreak Ridge was released in 1986, the same year than the first Top Gun film.
By the way, have you ever noticed the Clint Eastwood picture from Pale Rider, in the first Top Gun film ?
We can briefly see it in the last sequence of the film: when the jukebox starts playing the song that Tom Cruise previously and famously sang to Kelly McGillis.

I never watched Beavis and Butt-Head when it was originally on, with the exception of catching a few minutes of it here and there. I think it was last year that I watched Beavis and Butt-Head Do America for the first time. So I was interested when I saw that a new movie was coming to Paramount+ called Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe. This probably will be one of my favorites from this year. It was very funny. You probably know whether you'd like something like this (or you're like me and you're coming to it rather late). I almost did a spit take when I took a drink right before a particularly surprising and funny line. :2funny:

I'm curious about the Elvis movie but I don't know if I'll go see it. I've never really watched any of the Elvis biopics, though I would be interested in checking out the old John Carpenter version with Kurt Russell.

I'm not really familiar with the music of Elvis, so I wouldn't consider myself a fan, and I'm not planning on seeing the movie. Tom Hanks also seems to be an add choice to me for the character that he is playing, which has also influenced my feelings on seeing the movie. It's not the type of role that he typically does, and he doesn't physically fit the role either. He seems kind of miscast to me.

Complete change of mind.. I went last night to see Elvis and thought it an absolutely fantastic cinema experience.
The acting, music, cinematography and period detail were awesome.. both leads superb.
Id say it makes no difference if you are a Presley fan or not.. this is a superb piece of filmmaking and story telling.
It gets the full Gant recommendation..
Id be very surprised if Hanks isnt nominated for an Oscar..

Hey, what?s up?!

I just saw Elvis this weekend. I was amazed how well Austin Butler handled the role. Saw an interview where he said he spent two years getting ready for the role. Every single detail seemed like him, I kept having wow-effects throuhgout the film. Been an Elvis fan since my teens, and this movie also made me very sad. Kept crying when I got home, it always makes me sad how his life went.

I took my girlfriend to see this.  It?s always interesting to see what the MCU is up to, but am still very disappointed at Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans for no longer being a part of it as Iron Man and Captain America.

We enjoyed this film.  Speaking for myself, it was a little too long.  I?m still reeling over the long, drawn out cinematic experience of The Batman, so I wasn?t thrilled at experiencing a similar sensation while viewing this.  Still, it was entertaining more so than not and that?s a plus.

Well, I finally went August 1 to see Top Gun: Maverick. I did really enjoy it and I'm glad I saw it at the theater (over two months after its release! :o :D).

Not sure if this belongs here but last night saw Star Trek the Motion Picture on limited release.
4K restoration, directors cut back in the cinemas 43 years afters its original release.

Id only seen this previously  on vhs sometime in the early 80s. Very impressive up on the big screen.
I enjoyed it. Sure it?s a little slow and lacks action and humour but it?s Star Trek on a grand scale and all the cast shine..

Gant, do you prefer the director's cut to the original? I've only seen the original, which I like fine but I get why people criticize it. I've heard the director's cut is better. It's streaming on Paramount Plus and I've been meaning to watch it sometime.

Hi Christopher.. Its hard to compare because it?s so long since I saw the original and back then it was on video cassette? It was seeing it
up on the big screen last night that made the difference and it did look and sound fantastic.. I couldnt tell if any new scenes were added.. I suspect maybe a few short bits, reaction shots etc..
I can see why many don?t like it much, it?s not exactly a fun movie but I still enjoyed it and glad I got the opportunity to see it at the cinema
in a comfy seat with a glass of wine? Mrs Gant gave it a thumbs up too 😁

I saw The Director?s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture when it was first released on dvd.  I enjoy that version over the original.  The improved effects are great, but the film is still too damn long.  This would be much better as a tv episode, which would bring it under sixty minutes.  I would chop out the majority of the crew?s reaction to entering and flying through the V?Ger cloud.  That is the most supremely boring filmmaking I?ve ever experienced, after 2001: A Space Odyssey.

I originally had tickets to see it on the big screen, but something came up and exchanged them for another movie another day.  The only thing that would?ve made seeing this on the big screen is the enhanced effects.  I think they did a great job with that.

This is definitely a worthy sequel.  My girlfriend Cydney, her Dad Frank and I watched it last night and all enjoyed it.

Just back from a screening of Wrath of Khan.
Excellent movie. I don?t know what they do  when restoring these things but it looked and sounded amazing.
Fantastic performances all round and especially from Ricardo Montalban as Khan. You gotta have a great baddie 😁
I love seeing some of my favourite movies from the past back up on the big screen..
