"Which Way" Films...sequel better?

Hey, folks, I finally got around to watching Every Which Way but Loose again. It'd been such a long time since I'd seen it, it was almost like watching it for the first time.

Anyhow, I recall during the film discussion that some had mentioned that they thought Any Which Way You Can was better than Every Which Way but Loose. I saw AWWYC a while back, so I do kinda still remember it, but I really think the first was quite better. I was very surprised by the way the movie ended, Philo didn't get his girl and he threw the fight with Tank Murdock. Not exactly ending the way you'd think a movie like that would end. This original showed a lot of originality (besides co-starring a monkey ) by doing the unpredictable. I'm almost surprised by the fact that most critics dismissed the film when it was released.

Any thoughts?

Only that I totally agree with you.

There would not have been a sequel if the first film had not earned a pile of money.

We didn't really need Any which way, but it does have some fun moments .

Christopher, I'm one of the people you're talking about from the film discussion, but the question was which Clint comedies do we like best, and I said that I liked Any Which Way You Can better than Every Which Way But Loose. There's a big difference between listing what films are "better" than what films you just enjoy watching more. I never meant to imply that one film was better or more original than another, just that I find Any Which Way more enjoyable to watch. I like the characters better, since I think that Lynn Halsey-Taylor is more likeable, there's less Orville, no Echo, and I like Jack Wilson's character. I think the Black Widows are funnier this time around. I just like it better. I don't think a sequel was necessary, and I wouldn't have been broken up if there wasn't one, but between the two, it's the one I'd always prefer to watch.

One thing the sequel's got going for it in my opinion is William Smith. King of the bad guys.
That said I prefer the originals bittersweet feel.

The first film had more originality and soul, and the second film was fluffier but a lot of fun nonetheless.  The second film may have dissapointed some in the predictable way it made a happy ending for Philo and Lynn Halsey-Taylor, but I liked it.
Originally I was dissapointed that they didn't bring Echo back for the second, but I don't really mind anymore.  BTW I wonder why they didn't bring her back?
