Gone To Texas

Hello, This may be a silly question but, I was wondering if anyone out there has read the novel to "The Outlaw Josey Wales" I believe the book was called "Gone to Texas" Is the novel much different from the movie? I have looked Hi and Low for it with no luck.. I would assume the book has been retired from print. Can anyone suggest where I might get my hands on a copy?

Go to www.half.com ... you'll find it there.  You'll find the hardback for over a $100 ... but there are paperbacks available for far less.  I found Gone to Texas/The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales (the sequel) as a single book for less than $13 dollars.  Also found it titled The Outlaw Josey Wales as a movie tie-in.  Here's a link to Forrest Carter's books that are available:

The book is in print and can be ordered from Amazon.com for $11.48 plus shipping ... and you'll benefit this site, which has an affiliation with Amazon. (I hope I copied that link correctly so the affiliation will work.)

This is a University of New Mexico Press edition from November 1989, and it contains the original novel, which was originally published in 1973 under the title The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales, and subsequently under the titles Gone to Texas and The Outlaw Josey Wales, and the 1976 sequel, The Vengeance Trail of Josey Wales. It also has an Afterword by Lawrence Clayton.

Dorchester Publishing's Leisure Western series has just released the original novel The Outlaw Josey Wales. I was just out today at Walmart and saw it there, so I bought it. It's retail price is only $6.99.

That's not Eastwood on the cover, is it?  It does.. look like him

No, it's not Eastwood. The picture on the cover looks similar to a young Eastwood. However, it doesn't look like Eastwood from Josey Wales, nor does it even look like the way Josey is described in the novel (Josey does have facial hair in the book). You can probably see on the cover that Eastwood's name is mentioned not once, but twice! Under the title, it says "The basis for the classic movie starring Clint Eastwood." And right above Carter's name it has a quote from Eastwood: "A moving, exciting story about real characters who come alive on every page."

I would guess that's a first edition under that title. As you know, it was first published two years earlier under the title The Rebel Outlaw, Josey Wales.
