UK DVD's

At last we've UK got release dates for Heartbreak Ridge, Perfect World, Firefox and Unforgiven special edition.. Shame that their all late Jan and too late for Christmas.

Let's just hope they come in decent cases this time!...and that the cover art work is good.  Does anyone else think that the Region1 In The Line Of Fire Special Edition cover was terrible, and the Region 2 version was much better?  Also, I don't think much of the drawing of Josey Wales on the Reg2 DVD - surely a nice moody still from the movie would have looked better?  Maybe Matt should be image consultant to Warner Bros!

No, I'm not the one for that... I'm always so happy with anything I'm given... I'm the worst nightmare to some on the board when it comes to the DVD's we're getting.

I think Philo and Stranger should be in charge over there... we'd get the best possible product that way.

Fair enough, Matt.  Yeah, maybe you've got the right attitude; it's easy to get spoiled and be too picky.  Afterall, it's what's on the disc IN the box that matters - and that's always good where Clint's involved.  I guess we'll keep you as our online avatar specialist.

Well, it looks like their all gonna packaged in the usual cardboard cases... Heartbreak Ridge and Perfect World have trailers and Unforgiven and Firefox come with the same extras as they did with region 1 releases. The cover art looks the same as well....
I'm just glad to see these films released over here at long last. I havn't seen Perfect World since it's cinema release.. I just wish Thunderbolt and Lightfoot and Honky Tonk Man were also comin' soon.

Well I am more than happy having them in the proper boxes still in PAL but region 4 from down under .

Lilly I wasn't too worried about the covers on In the line of fire , what bothered me was that the UK disc was still cut (some special edition) . I therefore went for the American release .

Right on, Philo.  I wasn't aware that the UK version was cut until I saw the uncut version on the director's commentary part of the DVD, and in clips in the documentary features.  Seeing those explained something that bothered me from the scene where Frank shoots the counterfeiters.  In the UK version, Frank gets his pistol back from the guy that is holding Al, and says "you're under arrest", and he shoots at the guy to his right (but you don't see him fall).  There then follows a quick flash when Frank his pointing the gun at the guy holding Al again, but you don't see him shoot him, and you only hear the one shot that hit the other guy.  He then turns around to the chief counterfeiter.  I was confused when I watched this because I thought the guy holding Al must still be alive.  Then I saw the US version, which made far more sense.  The scene flows properly; Frank shoots the guy to his right, who you see fall, he then shoots the guy holding Al, and you know he's dead.  The editing for the UK cut was bad, because the second guy is supposed to be shot, but you don't know it; the sound of the second shot is cut out!  I don't get why they want to cut such a scene for a special edition DVD, and if they do, they should at least do it so the shots run smoothly.

The cut was made to lessen the impact of Al's suffering .

The murder of the 2 women was also shortned .

It's fair enough to protect youngsters from potentially disturbing material, but I wish there was a way to make the special edition uncut.  I guess they'd have to upgrage it to 18 classification, which seems a bit much.  Maybe they should bring in a new 15R category, to allow a 15 classification, whilst warning of some stronger content.  I very much support the efforts of the British Board of Film Classification in trying to protect kids, but sometimes they seem to go a bit awry.  The cut of the women's murder scene also had a detrimental effect on the film.  

I've been checking out the BBFC website, which enables you to search for films and see whether they have been cut.  I was pleased to see that Blood Work is going to be released uncut, rated 15.  I did a search of some other Clint movies and found that films which have been cut for UK release include GBU, both Which Way films, Outlaw Josey Wales, Pink Cadillac, The Beguiled, Heartbreak Ridge and The Rookie.  I'd be interested if anyone knows what was cut from Josey Wales, in particular.

Lilly.. are you talking about previous video releases. I'm sure I read somewhere that Heartbreak Ridge had been passed uncut for it's DVD release.

Hi Gant,
The original cinema release was cut by 16 seconds in 1986, and the video, in 1987, by 15 seconds.  However, when the widescreen video version was classified in 2001, all previous cuts were waived, and the film appeared uncut.  So probably the same will go for the DVD, but that isn't listed on the BBFC web site yet.  Sorry if my previous post was misleading; I meant that those films were cut at least for their original cinema release.  The same restrictions were usually carried over to the video/DVD versions, but sometimes cuts have been waived; I don't know if this is the case for any films other than Heartbreak Ridge.
