Hi All,

I was browsing through the board, and i noticed, that a great Eastwood film Escape From Alactraz has not been mentioned, This is a brilliant Eastwood film i i thought i should bring it to all your attention.

If you have seen in reply to this and tell me what you think of it

It´s very very good. With the exception of the shawshank redemption, i have never seen a prison movie which so clearly shows the triumph of the human spirit over oppression and inprisonment

This film has always been one of my favourites.
I have always enjoyed rewatching it from time to time, and it has never grown stale.

I don't know if we ever got to the bottom of where is Don Siegel ?

He is on some cast lists (not on the film prints) as a prison doctor.

Well it is not the one that examines Eastwood in the early scene.

I was watching this excellent film again the other evening and the only other clue was that on the second occasion they are up above the cell block one of the Anglin brothers has a pen light that he says he stole from the Doc's.

Maybe that was the scene. This may have already been covered in the past. However if not, I thought it could hold the key as to where he might have been.

Anyone else like Birdman of Alcatraz. Lancaster's great.

It's my second favourite Alcatraz film.  :)

Yes, Birdman is a great movie.

As for Escape from Alcatraz I think it's a very underrated film, seems to get overlooked far too easily.
It's a terrific drama, and a very pleasing addition to the Eastwood/Siegel partnership, I only have trouble with the credit  music by Jerry Fielding, as it's virtually non existent ???

Great film!  Also, underrated, was Patrick McGoohan in it...another one of the finest actors!

I liked it too , in fact more than the Shawshank Redemption in some ways , because it was not so meandering in its narrative . Just got to the nitty gritty of escape .

I don't remember ever hearing that Siegel had a cameo in Escape from Alcatraz!

This is a good movie, though I tend to rank it at or near the bottom of the Eastwood-Siegel films, but mainly because I just enjoy most of the others more.

I too noticed Masterchief has a birthday coming up ... he'll be 20. He was only 13 when he joined. He posted quite regularly there for a while, and has enough posts to rank as Senior Member, but he hasn't been around in a couple of years. Wonder what he's up to now?

I took the occasion to correct his typo in the thread title. ;)

Saw this on original release and remember enjoying it's quiet, gritty atmosphere.

I have to make sure I'm fully alert if I watch it now. Last time I did I'd been on night shift and found I could not stay awake - it's not boring It's just so quiet and underplayed. Few actors could cope with the internal and contained performance required here but Clint handles it with aplomb.

McGoohan is fantastic as is the supporting cast - I really liked Fred Ward in this too.
