From the April 12, 2004 issue of Sports Illustrated:

Quote
She perfected her snap kicks under the tutelage of Mr. Miyagi when she starred as The Next Karate Kid, and Hilary Swank will now add a crisp jab to her personal-defense repertoire for her new role as a boxer in Million Dollar Baby. Clint Eastwood will direct, produce and play the role of a grizzled fighter turned trainer who mentors Swank. The script was adapted from Rope Burns: Stories from the Corner by former fighter F.X. Toole. Swank has been training for the part at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, where Mike Tyson is performing community service to avoid jail time for his part in a brawl in front of a hotel last year. Swank's serious training regime prompted Ralph Macchio, the original Karate Kid, to say, "I have no doubt she can kick my butt." Filming is set to begin in L.A. in June.

Sounds like the role that the late great Burgess Meredith played in the Rocky films.  I never thought I would see Clint doing a role like that.  To be honest it sounds like a well-worn plot.

I haven't been on the board for a while and don't know too much about the plot - it was just my first impression that it was a tried and tested theme.

Burgess Meredith's character did fall in love with Rocky in a sort of non-sexual-mentoresque-father-son kind of way. :P

What was the name of his character anyway?

Does the Eiger Sanction count as sports movie as a sub-category?

Thanks for the news item, MC. I assume it's not to be found online, which is why you haven't given a link. Could you please give the title of the article, and, if it has a byline, could you mention the author's name? Credit where credit is due, you know.

he'll also have to have a towel constantly around his soliders, some sort of hat preferably a beanie or fisherman's cap and  finally a couple of days stubble.  This will all show that he is a tired but knowledgable ex-fighter.  Maybe also white gym shoes or plimsoles and grey tracksuit bottoms elasticated around the ankles and a drinking habbit????

That should fit the bill! ;D

ok script written or at least his wardrobe

how's he going to fit this film in with also be comissioner of parks and now on the film commission

i think it was easier to do this film than the last ride west
which requires locations etc.

presumably this will all be in the boxing ring

Yes, it is not available online. The story didn't stand alone but was a subsection of an SI department called "Sports Beat," thus the lack of a headline or byline.

At any rate, I was excited to see that Swank is training at the legendary Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn. It's a good sign she's taking the role seriously.

I just hope that Mike Tyson doesn't teach her any tricks (chew, chew, gnaw).  She does seem to be an actress that gets very involved in her role and I look forward to her in a movie directed by Clint.
