I recenetly imported Hang em High from the states as it has been deleted in New Zealand.
I had only watched once before ages ago. So I was exticed to finally get it plus it was the last in my Clint's Westerns collection.
After watching agian I have to agree it was lacking on action and the romance scene's were abit corny.
I guesss with the music and the dramatic start to the movie I was expecting abit more pace. Just didn't get into second gear. I think that they needed to show Cooper rounding up all Nine of the lynch mob.
I would have to rate Hang em high just above Joe Kidd and below Two Mules for Sister Sara in the western order for me.

I never really rated this movie, but after seeing it again today,it's certainly got a lot going for it.A great story, good music, although a little over bearing on some occasions, and what about the supporting cast.I would've like to have seen more of Ben Johnson ( what a great western actor ).
It may have been a little too long,I would've shortened the scene where he's bringing back Bruce Dern and the two young men through the desert. The romance angle with Inger Stevens could've been cut out alltogether.
But all in all it's a good movie, and it was Clint's first American Western so it's definitely worth another look.

Yeah the thing about Hang 'Em High that has always bothered me is the totally under-developed love affair.  I think it either could have been cut out as you said tgy, or just beefed up a little more.

Though I have to give the movie props for in a love scene using the line "Forget the salt".  HAHA.

Past that I really like the flick and think it's a good piece.

Yeah especially this first scene ... AWESOME

Agree about the love affair.
"Salt" scene is sooooooooooo cheesy  ;D ;D ;D ;D

It doesn't go anywhere, doesn't add anything to the plot, and in the end you don't even know if he gets the girl -well if she gets the guy  :D
