Yup, I saved a few threads from the "old days," and among them I found this post by Conan ... from Dec. 5, 1998. IIRR, he was on the "old" Eastwood board, as well.

Haha, back in the day...I remember saying that the "Green Berets" was a good movie, and then Holden blasting me for it  8)  It was warranted, "Green Berets" really is average at best...my taste changed a little on that one.  My overall point to that post remains though, other than "The Searchers" I haven't seen a Wayne western that I liked.

How old were you when you started posting here? We had one member, thekid, who was only 14 and posted a lot (and pretty good posts for a young'un too). He's the "youngest" I know of that stuck around for a while.

What I meant was that out of the members who have posted on this thread, I have been a member for the shortest amount of time.

Cool, Lilly! I was so nice back then.

Yeah, how times change.

Geez, 1997! :o  I wonder if Cal (or anyone else) has any of the original files, or screencaps.  I'd love to see the earliest version.  We could have a CEWB museum page. 8)

We'll need to find out from Cal when it "opened".

Yes, we should have a real party for the board's 10th birthday.

I'd love to see the earliest version.

Every post was simply: Enter username, enter subject, and enter the text.  Correct me if I'm wrong KC or Holden.

The post that really sticks out in my mind from that version of the board was Holden's "Friend of the ACLU" post where he took the side of all of Dirty Harry's bad guys.  He basically said that Harry violated their human rights, etc...Everyone - including myself - took him seriously and blasted him!  Steve, GMAT, and I among others.  Mini flame wars ensued and then he explained that he was joking.  It was a funny post that really got people fired up; wish I had saved it.

Was it like those sites where you can view the messages either "flat", or "threaded", where you have to click each post's title to read?  So many sites are still like that - it drives me crazy.  I should say at this point that Cal's web design makes a big difference to this site: no matter how good the conversation, if it hurts your eyes or your mouse finger to read a forum, you aren't going to post much.

Threaded.  You clicked on the subject, and you would see the post and any replies to it.  It was the old school webboard setup that lots of other boards used in the mid to late 90s.  Back then it was ok, but nowadays its considered bush league.  Cal's second iteration of the board, which he put up in '98 I think, was much better.

Bit of nostalgia going on here. 8)

I am still quite a baby relative to some of you old hands.  I was 24 when I joined on 15th November 2002.  I just made the old board by about a month.

My first post was in the "quotes" thread, and I remember Matt was nice and welcoming, and I thought that was unusual and cool for a web forum...and it got better from there. O0

Thanks for adding to this thread, Lilly. They're all great quotes.

And welcome to the web board. [Smile]

Hey Matt, thanks for the welcome; it put a smile on my face to be acknowledged by a moderator of such an illustrious web site.

I'm glad to put a smile on your face, and promise if you stick around, there will be a lot more where that came from. [Big Grin]

We have a lot of fun here, and our membership is small enough that everyone gets acknowledged. So I hope you'll continue to join in the discussions, and hopefully even check out the trivia games forum too... we can always use some help trying to solve some of those questions.

 8)  Matt, you kept your promise!  I wouldn't have believed then that I'd still be here now.
I remember that exchange. :D

What, have I been on the CEWB longer than these two veterans?!  :o I'm more distinguished than I thought  8)

Matt - you still ARE young...you'll always be, to us!
Oh yeah, you've been around much longer than I have. ;) I remember the first time I saw Ally around, Matt commented that seeing her around always brought a smile to his face. :) (wow, Matt, you really was nice ;D)

I've only been on the board for almost four years (Feb 12 might be my anniversary), which is a long time in cyberspace, I suppose, but there's a lot of "veterans" around here that have been around longer.

We've had a few kooky webboarders come and go, there was a guy named IBN that was here around '98 or '99 that was always stirring up trouble.  And there was another guy named Gunny ('00 and '01 I think) who was pretty controversial.  And a few more recent ones that I won't mention due to the statute of limitations  8)

Back to the future. What will it be like around here thirty years from now? (A Christmas Carol moment....)

I see it like this:

I vaguely remember IBN. Gunny is preserved forever in the first pages of the "ENDLESS POINTLESS THREAD". One of the best posts I ever read on the board was Holden replying to Gunny in his "own" language. Man, it was perfect.  KC, you don't have THAT saved anywhere, do you? We were all rolling reading that.

Pretty cool links, KC. I see vik has been around for a while too. I guess we could take notes from some of those references for the current thread we've had running for a while now. :D

How long has the Leone board been up?  Seems like its been around almost as long.

I'll check my documents directory later today and see if I have any interesting screenshots or HTML files of the second board ('98 - '02).  I know that I don't have any of the first one, as back then it was just a place to BS about Eastwood  8)

Yeah, you gotta keep up with the times.  The old board is better than some stuff still around today.

Good job, KC.  They're nice to see.  You rendered redundant my effort to post a screencap of the old board in late 2002 (just before the switch to this board), but I've hosted it now, so here's a link anyway.

Eventually someone's gonna realize that I was just hitting on all the single women on the board back then.
